What is a UL panel?
A UL panel is an electrical panel that is constructed and certified in accordance with UL standards (Underwriters Laboratories) – primarily UL508A for industrial control panels. UL certification is a requirement in the North American market and in many global projects where equipment must meet American and Canadian safety standards.
Unlike CE-marked panels that follow European standards such as IEC 61439, UL508A places specific requirements on component selection, cable sizing, short-circuit calculations, labelling and construction methods. A UL panel requires the use of UL-listed components and must be built by a UL-authorised panel builder such as Elcor.
When is a UL panel necessary?
Export to North America
Electrical equipment installed in the USA or Canada must meet UL and CSA standards. If your machine, production line or plant is to be exported to these markets, a UL508A-certified panel is a requirement to obtain approval from the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction).
International projects with UL requirements
Many multinational companies specify UL standards in their global procurement requirements, also for installations outside North America. This ensures consistent quality and safety levels across locations.
Oil & gas, marine and offshore
In sectors with strict safety requirements, UL certification is often a contractual requirement, regardless of the country of installation. Elcor has extensive experience delivering UL panels to these industries.
UL508A vs. IEC 61439 – what is the difference?
UL508A (North American standard) requires UL-listed components, specific cable types (AWG sizing), SCCR calculation (Short Circuit Current Rating) and Field Wiring marking. IEC 61439 (European standard) uses CE-marked components, mm² cable sizing and type-test verification. Elcor has expertise in both standards and can advise on which is relevant for your project.
