What is a distribution board?

A distribution board – also called an electrical panel or low-voltage board – is the central point in an electrical installation where power is distributed from the main supply to the individual circuits, machines and systems. The distribution board contains fuses, circuit breakers, residual current protection and any metering equipment that ensures power is distributed correctly and safely.

In industrial contexts, the distribution board is a critical component that directly affects the plant's uptime, safety and potential for expansion. Therefore, high demands are placed on construction, documentation and component selection – demands that Elcor meets in every delivery.

Types of distribution boards

Main boards (main distribution boards)

The main board receives power from the transformer or supply grid and distributes it further to sub-boards and large consumers. Elcor supplies main distribution boards with capacities up to several thousand amperes, dimensioned according to the plant's total load profile.

Sub-boards and sub-distribution boards

Sub-boards distribute power further from the main board to specific zones, floors or production lines. Sub-distribution boards are the final distribution unit before the individual circuits and outlets.

Low-voltage boards

Low-voltage boards typically operate up to 1,000 V AC and constitute the vast majority of industrial distribution boards. All Elcor's distribution boards are constructed in accordance with DS/EN 61439 and IEC 61439 – the standard for low-voltage boards.

Construction and components of a distribution board

A typical distribution board from Elcor contains: main switch, moulded case circuit breakers (MCCB), fuse groups, residual current circuit breakers (RCCB), busbar systems for power distribution, metering equipment for energy monitoring and communication modules for integration with BMS or SCADA. All components are selected from recognised manufacturers and dimensioned according to the specific installation's requirements.

Standards and certifications

Distribution boards from Elcor are built to IEC 61439 (low-voltage boards), DS/EN 61439-1 and -2, as well as any industry-specific requirements such as ATEX/IECEx for explosive zones or GMP/GAMP for pharma. All boards are FAT-tested (Factory Acceptance Test) before delivery and supplied with complete documentation.
